Tennessee short-term health insurance
Short-term and TriTerm plans in Tennessee: what the state allows, how long they can last, and what they do not do.
Need coverage in between?
Short-term and TriTerm plans can start quickly and help with big unexpected medical bills. They are not ACA plans: they can ask health questions, may not cover pre-existing conditions, and what is offered varies by state.
What Tennessee allows
| Starting length (one plan) | No state limit |
|---|---|
| Longest total, with renewals | Up to 36 months in practice |
| 3-year (“TriTerm”) plan | Yes, where a company offers it |
Tennessee sets no short-term duration limit of its own; companies file their rates and forms with the state.
Rules as of October 2026. Short-term rules change, and companies often sell shorter plans than the law allows. Check with the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance for the current rule.
What short-term plans are, and are not
- They are not ACA plans. They can ask health questions and turn an application down.
- They usually do not cover conditions you already have, and may leave out maternity, mental health, prescriptions or preventive care.
- They are not required to cover essential health benefits, and often have a maximum payout.
- They can start quickly, often within days, and you can apply any time of year.
- When one ends, that alone does not open an ACA enrollment period. Plan your next step early.
What “TriTerm” means
A TriTerm plan is a short-term medical plan built to be renewed so coverage can last up to three years (36 months), instead of starting over every few months. Whether that is possible depends on Tennessee’s rules and the company.
Before you choose one
Check first whether you qualify for help with an ACA plan on HealthCare.gov (federal Marketplace), or for Medicaid, or for coverage through an employer or a spouse. Those can be the stronger choice, especially if you have an ongoing condition. A short-term plan can still make sense if you need coverage now, are between jobs, or missed open enrollment.

Is short-term insurance real health insurance?
It is real coverage for what it covers, up to its limits, but it is not an ACA plan. It can decline you, usually excludes pre-existing conditions, and may not cover things like maternity or preventive care.
Does it count as coverage under the ACA?
No. Short-term plans are not minimum essential coverage, so they do not replace ACA coverage, and when one ends it does not by itself open a special enrollment period.
Who can tell me what is allowed in Tennessee?
Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance regulates insurance in Tennessee (https://www.tn.gov/commerce.html).
Do I have to enroll if I call?
No. A call is a conversation about your options.
